South Luangwa

South Luangwa is widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest safari destinations and is known for its exceptional wildlife density and guiding standards. Often described as the birthplace of the walking safari, the park offers a rich combination of game drives, walking experiences and beautiful riverine landscapes. It works equally well for first-time safari travellers and seasoned Africa enthusiasts, with excellent options across a range of comfort levels.

Best time to visit

South Luangwa is at its best during the dry season, when wildlife concentrates along the Luangwa River and game viewing is at its strongest. Walking safaris are a particular highlight during these months. The early dry season (May-July) offers lush scenery, while the later months (August–October) bring warmer temperatures and excellent predator sightings.

Lower Zambezi National Park

Set along the banks of the Zambezi River, this park offers a wonderfully relaxed and immersive safari experience. Wildlife encounters unfold at a slower pace here, with activities including game drives, walking safaris and canoeing along the river. The scenery is a standout, and the Lower Zambezi pairs beautifully with South Luangwa or Kafue, offering contrast in both landscape and rhythm.

Best time to visit

The Lower Zambezi shines in the dry months (May-October), when river levels are ideal for canoeing and wildlife gathers along the banks of the Zambezi. June-October offers a relaxed safari rhythm, combining game drives, walking safaris and water-based activities, all set against a beautiful riverine backdrop.

Kafue National Park

Kafue is Zambia’s largest and most diverse national park, offering an incredible sense of scale and variety. From the open plains of Busanga to river systems and woodland habitats, Kafue provides a more remote and exploratory safari experience. It is ideal for travellers seeking space, solitude and a feeling of true wilderness.

Best time to visit

Kafue is a vast and varied park, and timing can depend on the area visited. The dry season offers the best overall access and wildlife viewing, particularly in the Busanga Plains, which are typically accessible from mid-year onwards. (June – October) Birding is superb in the greener months (April-June). Later in the season, wildlife concentrates around water sources, making sightings more frequent. For Big Game enthusiasts, sightings typically increase from July onwards as the bush strips away.

Livingstone & Victoria Falls

Livingstone is the natural gateway to Zambia and home to the iconic Victoria Falls. Beyond the Falls themselves, the area offers a wide range of activities - from river cruises and cultural experiences to gentle wildlife encounters in nearby national parks. With many lodges based along the banks of the Zambezi, Livingstone works well as either a starting point or a fitting finale to a safari, adding variety and a sense of place to a journey.

Best time to visit

Livingstone is a flexible year-round destination. The Victoria Falls themselves change dramatically through the seasons - powerful and thundering after the rains, and more open and sculpted later in the year. It is worth noting that in November-December, the Falls are at their lowest. Wildlife experiences, river cruises and activities on the Zambezi are available throughout the year, making Livingstone an easy addition to most itineraries.

Other Regions of Zambia

In addition to the core destinations above, Zambia offers several more remote and seasonal areas for travellers looking to explore further. These include the vast open plains of Liuwa Plain National Park, the wetlands of Bangweulu, the bat migration of Kasanka National Park and the untouched wilderness of North Luangwa. These regions are best suited to travellers with specific interests or those seeking something truly off the beaten path, and can be incorporated where timing and logistics allow.
